2017: The Year Ahead - Projects

Write on.

Greetings, dear readers, listeners, watchers, and lurkers. It's February, and it's time to share my goals for this year.

I've essentially scheduled things so that I'll be releasing about a project per month. This would be a crazy schedule if I were working on everything from scratch, but most of these projects are somewhere between 75%-90% complete already. I just need to finish them off. So, the year looks like this (God, Random Chance, or Programmer spares me).

January - The Nosleep Live Tours

This consists of four scripts I've been commissioned to write for The Nosleep Podcast, easily one of the best horror fiction podcasts I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. There's a live tour going on in February and March across the USA, and the extremely talented cast will be treading the boards performing one of these four audio plays each night (16 shows in all), as well as narrating some stories from other writers and doing a Q&A. I finished these at the beginning of February.

Status: Complete

February - From a Campfire's Embers...

This is a series of six horror stories I'm writing to be broadcast via the Ghastly Tales Podcast. I piloted the idea a couple of years ago by writing and narrating The Whispering Woods. A special seventh episode is in the works which will be a 360 short film set at a campfire. The stories range from 1500 to 3000 words in length. There will be a book version of these stories so that they can be told around a campfire. The book may or may not release this year, though.

Status: 4 out of 6 stories complete.

March - On A Hill/ Do You Believe in Ghosts? (Working Title)

On a Hill continues to surprise me by selling in decent numbers. I'm so pleased with how the story turned out; however, when I self published it I was only testing the process and didn't think I'd sell any copies, never mind the 20k to 30k I've sold so far. For that reason, it was published essentially unedited. There are typos, but the story also needs tightened up a little. I'll be releasing this rewritten second edition, possibly with a second connected story as part of it, in March. This will include a physical version, and the digital version will be made available to all those who have already bought the book (Kindle will automatically update your copy). I'll also be working on a short horror film in March, more on that to follow. It's essentially a short anthology horror piece with two ghost stories connected by a central narrative.

Status:  The cover artwork for On A Hill is complete. I've received suggested edits from my editor (the always insightful Martin Yates). Just need to implement those I agree with. As for the film, the script is complete. A Makeup FX artist has joined our team. Just scouting locations and casting a couple of roles still unfilled.

April - Near Midnight Series 1

An anthology horror series of fully produced, acted, and scored plays. There are six episodes all in all, and I'm very lucky to have some of the best voice actors out there working on it with me. Each episode is stand alone. Martin Yates is the host of the show, while I'll be working in the background as the writer, musician, and producer. It should be a blast, and I can't wait for everyone to hear it. I'll be distributing the episodes free of charge through The Ghastly Tales Horror Show via Libsyn, iTunes and Youtube.

Status: Two episodes recorded, a third written. Three more outlined.

May - Ghost Stories of a Contemporary

Inspired by one of my heroes, M. R. James (who wrote Ghost Stories of an Antiquary), this will be my next short story collection. It has a theme of haunted places and items running through it, and focuses largely on the past reaching out to taint the present. There are 13 stories in all, seven of which have appeared elsewhere but have never been collected together. The final six stories are completely new.

Status: 9 stories complete. Four more in different stages of completion.

June - From a Campfire's Embers Series II

Another series of Campfire tales. This time around we'll have another six stories, with a potential seventh being told across one or more mediums. I'm tinkering with the idea of telling part of the story on Youtube as a short film, and the rest as a narrated tale.

Status: 6 stories outlined.

July - Bedtime: A Ghost Story

I've been working on this for five years in one form or another, and while I'm almost done, I'm giving myself until July to have everything in place for release. There's a lot of anticipation for this one, so I have to get it right. It's a novel, and draws inspiration from my early short story series Bedtime. It's not a sequel, more of a retelling of the original concept. It follows the central character who believes he may have repressed memories due to traumatic experiences in his early life. As an adult, and just about to marry, he begins to suffer from panic attacks and a recurring dream he cannot fully remember. Convinced that he must uncover his past to understand himself, he opens doors which from then on cannot be closed. A terror from his childhood which is not of this world, again walks the earth.

Status: I've written this book several times, all with different approaches. But I've settled on a structure not too dissimilar from Dracula, in that it's told in the form of journal entries, and more modern sources such as forum posts and interview transcripts. The first draft of this approach is complete. I am on the second draft, then it needs edited, then a third draft and published.

August - The Halloween Path

A short film about two friends who go in search of a ghost on Halloween. More details to follow on this one, but I'm hoping to shoot it in August so that it will be out for mid October.

Status: Treatment completed. Script started.

September -  Near Midnight Series II

The final six episodes of Near Midnight. I'll decide after release whether there will be a series three, but I intend on doing an audio series of one story across six parts in 2018, so I'll have to see about whether Near Midnight will come back then or not.

Status - 3 of 6 stories outlined.

October - The Mermaid of Porthleven

A novella of around 20,000 words. It follows the adventures of a 15 year old boy while in a small Cornish town called Porthleven. There, he, his best friend and his two cousins venture into the caves near the town, only to be trapped as the tide comes in. They have no choice but to proceed deeper into the ground, where something rotten and malevolent resides. It's a departure for me, half adventure story, half horror. Think of it as Lovecraft meets The Goonies.

Status - First draft complete. Needs edited and redrafted.

November - A Ghost Story For Christmas

The timing of this one is still in flux. We want to shoot a Christmas themed supernatural short film, in the same vein as the BBC ghost stories from the 70s. We're discussing the timing, and might end up filming it in the summer if possible to make sure it's in the bag. But we'll just have to see about that.

Status - Working on treatment.

December - The Horrors of Christmas

Three more horror narrations of Christmas themed stories. Two of them completely new. These will appear on The Ghastly Tales Horror Show and on Youtube. They will also be added to my book, The Horrors of Christmas.

Status - One story 75% complete.

The Best Laid Schemes o' Mice and Men

I intend to do everything I can to stick to this schedule, but of course, who knows what the months of 2017 will bring. Hopefully fun and sunshine, but you never know what's lurking around the corner...
